Crimes of the Heart


Auditions for Bloomington Civic Theatre’s Crimes of the Heart (Director Wendy Lehr) will be Sat., Feb. 11, 10:00 a.m., Sun., Feb. 12, 1:00 p.m., with callbacks on Mon. evening, Feb. 13, time TBD. APPOINTMENTS IN ADVANCE ARE NECESSARY. Audition location is the Center for the Arts in the Bloomington Civic Plaza, on the southeast corner of 98th St. and Logan Ave. in Bloomington, MN (actual street address is 1800 W. Old Shakopee Rd.).

All non-union actors are invited to audition, particularly 20s – 40s in age range. $200 stipend. Rehearsals will begin approximately Apr. 9 and will generally be weeknights with some weekend rehearsals likely. This is subject to change. Plan for a full weekend rehearsal Sat. and Sun., May 12 and 13. Performance schedule is May 18 – June 10 (15 performances). Please note the rehearsal period and performance dates before requesting an audition time.

Audition: Resume and headshot will be collected at the time of audition. Please arrive a few minutes prior to your appointment time to allow for completing paperwork. Actors will be expected to read with a Southern dialect. Appointments will be scheduled in 30-minute blocks. Actors will read in groups from the script.

Crimes of the Heart

Character descriptions:

Lenny Magrath, 30, the oldest sister, dutiful, caring, lonely, a dreamer. Late 20s to early 40s.

Chick Boyle, 29, the sisters’ first cousin, a drama queen, flamboyant, slightly vulgar, into everyone’s business. Late 20s to mid-40s.

Doc Porter, 30, Meg’s old boyfriend, attractive, worn, with a slight limp, sensitive, seductive. Early 20s to early 40s.

Meg Magrath, 27, the middle sister, fun-loving, wild, artistic with a touch of sadness about her, unbalanced. Early 20s to mid 30s.

Babe Botrelle, 24, the youngest sister, angelic, volatile, strong-willed, pretty. Late teens to late 20s.

Barnette Lloyd, 26, Babe’s lawyer, fanatically intellectual, uses sheer will to hide his feelings. Early 20s to mid 30s.

Wendy Lehr (Director) Wendy began her theater career in Minnesota in 1962. From 1966-1986 she was a resident actress at Children's Theatre Company (CTC) where she returned from 1990-1998 as Associate Artistic Director and Director of Education. She was a member of Arizona Theatre Company, acting from 1986-1990. Upon leaving CTC she performed locally at Jungle Theater, Guthrie Theater, Park Square Theatre, Illusion Theater and History Theatre, as well as Theatre de la Jeune Lune, Theater Latté Da and Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. Regional credits include Seaside Music Theater (FL), Lyric Opera Cleveland and Kansas City Rep. Wendy has directed over 20 productions at CTC, including five premieres and three national tours. She has directed at Park Square Theatre, Seaside Music Theater, Lyric Opera Cleveland, The National Arts Centre (Ottawa), University of Minnesota and Hamline University. In 2005 she helped create Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists (SPCPA) where she served as Artistic Director until 2009. The Lehr Theater in downtown Saint Paul was named by SPCPA in her honor. Wendy is the recipient of the 2008 Sally Ordway Irvine Award for Commitment in the Arts and the Ivey 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award.


42nd Street


Auditions for Bloomington Civic Theatre’s 42nd Street (Director Michael Matthew Ferrell, Music Director Anita Ruth) will be Sun., Feb. 26 beginning at 5:00, Mon., Feb 27 beginning at 6:30, with callbacks Wed., Feb. 29 beginning at 6:30. APPOINTMENTS IN ADVANCE ARE NECESSARY. Audition location is the Center for the Arts in the Bloomington Civic Plaza, on the southeast corner of 98th St. and Logan Ave. in Bloomington, MN (actual street address is 1800 W. Song: Please prepare 16 measures of a song of the musical theater genre, although you may be asked to sing more. Please bring sheet music. Accompaniment provided. Monologue: Please prepare a short monologue no longer than two minutes. Dance: There will be NO dance call during the first audition, only at callbacks.

Character descriptions:

Dorothy Brock – An established Broadway star. Age range 30s to 50s. Strong singing and acting role.

Peggy Sawyer – Young, talented, hopeful newcomer auditioning for her first Broadway show. Triple Threat!

Maggie Jones – Co-author of Pretty Lady. Age range 30s to 50s. Some dance helpful.

Ann Reilly (Anytime Annie) – Sub-principal in Pretty Lady. Heavy dance role.

Phyllis Dale, Lorraine Flemming – Chorus girls. Heavy dance roles.

Gladys – Chorus girl. Non-speaking, but has singing lines.

Diane Lorimer, Ethyl – Chorus girls. Heavy dance roles.

Julian Marsh – Broadway show director. Age range 40s to 60s. Strong singing and acting role.

Bert Barry – Co-author of Pretty Lady. Age range 30s to 50s. Some dance helpful. Piano player a plus, but not necessary.

Billy Lawlor – Juvenile lead of Pretty Lady. Heavy dance role.

Andy Lee – Dance Director. Heavy dance role.

Oscar – Rehearsal pianist. Would be a plus if could play piano, but not necessary.

Mac – Stage Manager

Pat Denning – Former vaudeville partner of Dorothy’s. Age range 30s to 50s.

Abner Dillon – Producer and Dorothy’s “sugar daddy.” Age range 40s to 70s.

Ensemble – Strong singers/tap dancers. Also various small character roles!

Michael Matthew Ferrell (Director/Choreographer) Michael is the 2007 Ivey Award recipient for Choreography.and 2010 Choreographer of the Year named by Lavender Magazine. Credits include Oklahoma! (Bloomington Civic Theatre); Ragtime (Park Square Theatre); The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Evita, The Full Monty, Parade, Gypsy, The Rink, and Passage of Dreams (Theatre Latté Da); You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown, Grand Night for Singing, and Broadway’s Legendary Ladies (Ordway Center); Wizard of Oz, Annie, Babe The Sheep Pig, Tommy, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Disney’s High School Musical, A Year with Frog and Toad, and Fashion 47 (Children’s Theatre Company); Cats, Annie, The Sound of Music, Camelot, The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Forever Plaid, Oklahoma!, and Can Can (Chanhassen Dinner Theatres). Additionally, his work has been seen at The Minnesota Opera Company, Minnetonka Theatre, Sesame Street, Stages Theatre Company, Pantages Theatre, Disney World Orlando, and Guthrie Theatre Cabaret shows. He is also the Founder and Artistic Director of Alive & Kickin, the Twin Cities newest musical ensemble of Rockin’ Senior Citizens!

Anita Ruth (Musical Director) Anita has been BCT’s resident musical director since 2005 as well as having worked on over 150 musicals the last thirty years. Anita music directed for Chanhassen Dinner Theatres for twenty years and has been a freelance music director and orchestrator at Guthrie Theater, Children’s Theatre Company, Park Square Theatre and Theatre Mu, among others.
